Notes from Ingleside Community Meeting 5/21/13

Thanks to our neighbors at BernalSafe for providing notes from Ingleside Police Station Community Meeting.

A few highlights:

  • There was a 44% drop in violent crimes from March to April.  Robberies are still up 42% YTD, but there has been a 15% decrease in all other violent crimes YTD
  • Robberies have been trending down the past three months.  They can’t say exactly why, but arrests are up a LOT, and the police have been using Compstat to deploy resources to high-crime areas
  • Property crimes are up 17% YTD, with the biggest driver being theft from autos (up 71% YTD, but also declining in recent months)
  • Personal thefts are up – again, it’s largely phones, iPads, laptops left in cars or at Starbucks when you go to the bathroom (do NOT do that).  This category also includes shoplifting

Upcoming Events:

  • Police Commission meeting in Ingleside – Weds., 5/29, 6pm in the Balboa High School Green Room, 1000 Cayuga.  Captain Falvey will present some information, and then there will be Q&A with commissioners and a time for public comment
  • “School’s Out” Traffic Safety and Enforcement. Two trailers, three motorcycle officers – focusing on areas kids hang out when not in school. Education and enforcement so motorists look out for kids
  • National Night Out – August 6 at Miraloma Park Improvement Association.  30th year of National Night Out, designed to have citizens get to know the police.

SNA Greening Work Day – Sunday, June 2 from 9:00 a.m.

The SNA Green Committee will continue their work on Circular next Sunday, pulling non-native grasses, fennel and other “weeds.”

They will meet at 9 a.m. on the east side of the Baden Bridge, putting gear near the “succulent garden.” Please use the pedestrian crossing to get there. They would love to have a large team to finish this area, and continue down toward Congo.

If you’ve good clippers, bring them – ivy needs to be trimmed back from the trees.  Also, if possible, bring a bucket to contain your weeds. They have used up the paper shopping bags that used to be so plentiful! Now we’ll use buckets, and load weeds into the huge lawn bags.  They will provide trowels, gloves, and safety vests if you don’t have your own.  Coffee, water and cookies will be provided. If someone would like to bring homemade cookies, they’ll be very welcome!

FUF Tree Planting in Sunnyside – August 17, 2013

How many trees can we plant in Sunnyside!  Let’s challenge ourselves!

FUF has chosen Sunnyside for their next tree planting in August.  Sign up is necessary by mid-July.

Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) helps individuals and neighborhood groups plant and care for street trees and sidewalk gardens in San Francisco.

Homeowners and renters are eligible for trees.  You can even sponsor a tree in the neighborhood.  We need as many participants as possible to have this planting happen.

Let’s keep greening Sunnyside, for information on the FUF program and to apply, visit their website http://www.fuf.net

Now’s the time to sign the forms and choose the tree species you want. Contact Caitlin at (415) 268-0772 or caitlin@fuf.net. It’s important to be signed up by mid-July.
