Sunnyside All Aboard! – Monthly Coffee date with The SNA/Community Sidewalk Sale Combined!

Get ready for a fantastic community weekend! We’re changing things up for our monthly “Coffee with the Board” event and bringing it right to the heart of the action.

This month, we’re moving our regular get-together to help kick off the Annual Sunnyside Community Garage Sale! Come join us at the foot of the beautiful Detroit Steps for a morning chat before you head out to find some neighborhood treasures.

It’s a great chance to fuel up, say hi to the board and your neighbors, and plan your garage sale strategy. We’ll bring the coffee and donuts, you just bring yourselves!

Here are the details:

So, come grab a free coffee and a donut, and let’s get the annual garage sale started right. See you there!

Help Sunnyside Elementary School to spruce up its learning garden!

This Saturday, September 20th, the Sunnyside Elementary School parent volunteers will have a Green Up Clean Up day to spruce up our school garden and do a few school beautification projects from 9am to 1pm. They are looking for help from neighbors to make it an even better space for students, many of which reside in our community.

You can bring the kids as well as friends! Last year, many kids joined garden clean ups and were put them to work! If they are not so much into it: they can bike or play in the school yard. Kids are welcome and can be helpful.

Things they plan to do:
– Move benches around the school. Sunnyside was awarded a grant to add some benches around the school yard. Those benches have been delivered but now they are all hanging out in our school garden and need to be moved to better places all around the yard where they will be used. Come help us move the benches!
– trim down the garden and weed. All summer long, the garden grew and it’s gotten a bit unwieldy. We will remove some older plants and trim down those that have grown too large.
– Build a new raised garden bed. We are slowly working a new plan to renovate the garden and taking it step by step. We would love to use some newly donated wood to build a second raised garden bed. This may require some advance preparation but we can try to be ready for this project by 9/20.
– Many of us want to replant that area in front of the school that’s a bit barren now. If we can get a few willing to take this on, we could tackle this.
-Reorganize a storage shed. There is a storage shed on campus full of garden tools. Let’s get them out and sort through them, see what’s useful and what’s not.
– Even if you don’t want to join this event, we welcome donations! Seeds, small pots, garden soil, compost, plants and cuttings are all very welcome.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Jamie Patton at japatton@gmail.com or 415-302-1179. Thank you in advance for helping make our neighborhood school even better!

Second Round Proposed Amendments to Bylaws Posted for Review by SNA Members

Amendments proposed to the bylaws of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association (SNA) have been posted to SNA’s website for review by its members. Bylaws are the rules that govern the operations of SNA, and the proposed amendments will be reviewed and voted on during SNA’s next quarterly meeting in August.

As stated in the bylaws, members must be given at least 30 days to submit proposed amendments in writing prior to the next membership meeting. At least 75% of active members in attendance must approve the proposed changes for them to be adopted. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 11, at 6:30 PM.

The original bylaws were adopted on September 24, 1974, when SNA was established. They were amended once in May 2016. The first proposed amended bylaws were posted on June 27, 2025. Since then, the board has received additional proposals for amendments, which have been incorporated.

Seeking Volunteers to Paint Upper Detroit Steps

The Upper Detroit Steps Mural Project is 60% complete, reports Tad Sky, artist-in-residence. Thanks to Tad and dozens of volunteers, our gray steps are transforming into an iconic piece of community art unlike any other in San Francisco. Volunteers who complete two or more shifts can get a Detroit Steps cap and T-Shirt.

This Labor Day Weekend (Saturday & Sunday, 10am–4pm), volunteers will be back on the steps, and we are seeking creative volunteers to join us for a two-hour shift to paint at 10am, noon, and/or 2pm.

“We are incredibly grateful for the talents volunteers shared so far, and we warmly invite Sunnysiders and others to laugh, paint, and feel the inspiration,” Tad said. These colorful steps—115 in all—will brighten Sunnyside for years to come.”

Where: Upper Detroit Steps, Sunnyside (between Hearst & Detroit)
