Tax Savings for Homeowners

The SF City agency called the Office of the Assessor-Recorder has information and programs relevant to property taxation and house-buying. This is the first in a series of posts SNA will be publishing with information posts directly from this agency, which may help you better understand this aspect of homeownership and possibly save you money on your property tax bill.

From the Office of Assessor Carmen Chu: Tax Savings for Homeowners

If you own and occupy your property as a primary residence, you may be eligible for a Homeowner’s Exemption. The Homeowner’s Exemption is a $7,000 deduction from your assessed value, not from your property tax due. For example, if you qualify for the exemption, your assessed value of $700,000 will be reduced to $693,000 ($700,000-$7,000) and you should expect to save $ 82.54.

If you are eligible and do not see an exemption amount on your tax bill, please download the Homeowner’s Exemption Claim form from our website (www.sfassessor.org). Continue reading “Tax Savings for Homeowners”

Monterey Safeway expansion plans scrapped; store to be ‘upgraded’

For ten years there have been plans afoot to remodel and expand Sunnyside’s Safeway store at 625 Monterey Blvd. Representatives from Albertsons Companies, which bought the Safeway chain in 2015, have just announced that these original plans to overhaul the store are no longer being pursued by the company.

Natalie Mattei, Albertsons Senior Real Estate Manager, has been in regular contact with SNA over the years. She had this to say about the change in plans this week:

“Although the existing store was not being demolished [under previous plans], the extensive construction would have resulted in the grocery store being closed for 10-14 months. Safeway was fortunate to have an amazing group of immediate neighbors and interested community members who helped with design questions and support the entitlement effort. Safeway was close to obtaining building permits this past Fall, at which time a review of building costs and retail developments caused Safeway to pause on an expansion into the parking lot at this time.

“Safeway has been and continues to be a proud member of the Sunnyside neighborhood. … Although an expansion of the grocery store is not feasible at this time, Safeway is still committed to renovating and upgrading the existing store. I would anticipate this design going through the building permit process and getting underway later in 2018. The store should be able to remain in operation through most if not all of the construction.”

SNA Elections coming in February

banner-crop

As per our Bylaws, Sunnyside Neighborhood Association will be holding its biennial elections at our next quarterly meeting, on Monday Feb 5, 2018 (7pm). Any Sunnyside resident who is an active member of SNA is eligible to hold a board position. See below for an excerpt from the Bylaws which define the five board positions.

If you are a Sunnyside resident who is interested in serving on the board, please contact SNA (info@sunnysideassociation.org) or simply come to the Feb 5 meeting. As per the Bylaws, nominations and voting take place in person without provision for proxies or paper ballots.

We also always welcome any member’s participation in any area you’d like to work on that benefits our community. We have several open project aims, such as artwork for the lower Detroit Steps, or a mini-park for the sewer lots between Mangels and Joost – but these projects languish without volunteer leadership. Please contact the board if you would like to chair a committee or volunteer: info@sunnysideassociation.org.

In addition, all local residents are invited to be part of the ongoing Balboa Reservoir community input process (more here).  Continue reading “SNA Elections coming in February”
