A survey of what’s open and how things are going for businesses on Monterey Boulevard during the coronavirus stay-at-home order, with a focus on those that serve local needs.


Railroad Expresso, 705 Monterey Blvd. Takeout only. Open limited hours: Mon-Fri 6AM to 1 PM. Sat-Sun 7 AM to 12 PM.

Owner Josepha Smith says: “Everyone has been so nice, waiting for their drinks. People are not in such a big rush!” To-go coffee containers have been popular.

Won Kok Restaurant, 700 Monterey: Closed, “until May 1” says posted sign.


Shanghai Dumpling, 696 Monterey: Closed, “until April 29” says posted sign.


Heff’s Barbers, 693 Monterey: Closed.


Sol y Luna Spa: Closed “until further notice” says posted sign.


Pho Dong Huong, 667 Monterey: Online takeout orders only, 11 AM to 2 AM. Use Ubereats, Postmates, Grubhub or Doordash.


Safeway, 625 Monterey: Open 6 Am to 10 PM daily. Senior hours: Tues and Thurs 6 – 9 AM.

Manager Kevin H says: “It’s hectic, but everyone has been very respectful.” The parking lot was full on a Monday morning, but the lines inside were not too long. Cashiers all in gloves and masks, as were many customers.

In gearing up for a big bond measure in November, San Francisco Recreation and Parks Dept. (SFRPD) is asking park-users how they would improve the playgrounds, picnic areas, soccer fields, trails, and other amenities of the city’s parks.

Quick response by City on stolen stop sign

Last weekend, a stop sign disappeared from the corner of Hearst and Edna. Notified by neighbors, the Dept of Public Works replaced the sign on this busy school corner promptly on Monday morning.

But they forgot the “One-Way” sign on top, to prevent cars turning the wrong way into a narrow section of Edna. The problem was addressed quickly once again, early on Tuesday morning.  Continue reading “Quick response by City on stolen stop sign”
