Slow Streets for Hearst Ave approved by SFMTA

On Tuesday, SFMTA had officially approved the implementation of the Slow Streets program on Hearst Avenue in Sunnyside, along with streets in SoMa, Inner Sunset, and the Western Addition. The designated blocks for Hearst will run from Baden Street to Ridgewood Ave.

This program prohibits vehicle through-traffic in order to make space for walking and cycling in the street as needed for socially distanced outdoor exercise — but it does not restrict families dropping off students at local schools, or residents coming and going from their home, or vehicles making deliveries. The success of the program will be assessed after it has been in place for a while, as with all the streets in the Slow Streets program.

Sunnyside Elementary School to reopen on Monday April 12

After this long break from in-person classes, many Sunnyside ES families will be happy to see their children back in school this coming Monday. However, Sunnyside neighbors should be aware that the school anticipates traffic congestion especially during the initial weeks when all, school administrators, and parents will be adjusting to a new way of dropping children off to school.

From the Sunnyside Elementary School Principal, Dr Spoering:

“Thank you for being such good neighbors and looking out for our school during this time!   Sunnyside ES is reopening for in-person learning this school year, starting April 12, 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.  Please expect some temporary disruption to traffic in the neighborhood, in the mornings and afternoons especially.   The school will do its best to mitigate any traffic congestion in the area related to school reopening.  Your patience and understanding are greatly appreciated.  “

Sunnysider Bill Wilson featured in SF Bay Times

Photographer and longtime SNA member Bill Wilson has made a special subject of the President-Elect Joe Biden’s long political career. His photographs and related memories were featured in this month’s Bay Times. Congratulations, Bill!

In the article, Bill recalls:

“When Joe Biden was elected senator, he hired one of my co-workers to be on his staff. I discovered that Biden’s secretary lived in the same apartment building that I lived in. We became good friends and she encouraged me to take photos of the Senator. He signed one of those photos for me, writing, ‘You have been a great help to us and a fine friend.’ “
