Frida Kahlo Way Quick-Build Project Update

Hello from the Frida Kahlo Way Quick-Build project team!

Thank you for your interest in this project. We’re pleased to share some updates on this project going into the new year.

Project Outreach Summary

Thanks to all who attended our open house event on December 5th or otherwise provided their input on the project in 2023. We’d like to share a summary of project outreach activities that the team underwent during the 2023 calendar year as well as a look ahead to 2024. This document gives an overview of the team’s outreach process and the key themes that we heard from you.

Next Steps

In early 2024, the project team will continue public outreach while refining the proposed design to respond to feedback received in 2023. In particular, the team will engage directly with the City College student body to better understand concerns expressed by student body leadership at the December 5th open house.

Design work will be focused on finding creative solutions for preserving as much on-street parking as possible while prioritizing safety for people walking and biking. The team will additionally continue coordination with City College around construction phasing to determine near-term design impacts on the Project.

Following design changes and additional public engagement, the project team intends to advance the project through the legislative process. A revised project proposal will be made available for review online and the team will provide an email update to the project contact list. A virtual engineering public hearing will provide another opportunity for the general public to express their opinions on the Project. The Project will then be subject to approval by the SFMTA Board of Directors, who will take final public comment before considering project approval and other next steps.

Thanks for your interest in this project! If you have additional questions or comments, please reach out at FridaQB@SFMTA.com

Entwined: Elder Mother Marks a New Chapter for Art Installation in GGPThe San Francisco Parks Alliance and Rec and Park, in partnership with Bay Area artist Charles Gadeken, announced earlier this week a new iteration of Entwined, the annual illuminated art installation hosted in Golden Gate Park.
“Entwined: Elder Mother” will welcome visitors to the JFK Promenade in front of Peacock Meadow in Golden Gate Park from December 7 through April 28, 2024. The ever-evolving forest of light first lit up Peacock Meadow in 2020 and has become a winter staple at the park.
The defining new feature of Entwined: Elder Mother is the Elder Mother tree itself. It is a monumental shade-bearing tree that moves in the wind and speaks through the language of light and color. The 30-foot metal sculpted tree carries a 25-foot canopy offering a place for park-goers to gather day and night with ever-changing, interactive illumination and color.
Entwined: Elder Mother was designed by Charles Gadeken, who champions accessibility to art and interactive experiences and whose work includes commissions from Burning Man, Insomniac Events, Coachella, the City of Palo Alto, the City and County of San Francisco and more.
Monthly live programming will again be hosted at the installation this season. These events kick off with the holiday tree lighting ceremony on December 7 at McLaren Lodge (501 Stanyan Street). More events will be announced on a rolling basis. For more information, click the link below. Entwined: Elder Mother
Skystar Ferris Wheel Opens at Fisherman’s WharfEarlier this week, Mayor London Breed announced the arrival of the Skystar Wheel at its new location at Fisherman’s Wharf. After a three-year run at the Golden Gate Park Music Concourse, it will now entertain riders with unparalleled views of the City’s waterfront.

We’re grateful for the unique experience the wheel brought to Golden Gate Park and for all the joy and memories it helped create for visitors and residents alike. We look forward to seeing its new amazing views soon! For more information, click the link below.

New Golden Gate Park Shuttle Stop at 8th Avenue on the JFK PromenadeWe’re excited to share that the free Golden Gate Park Shuttle has a new stop at 8th Avenue on the JFK Promenade. The westbound stop is located on the northern side of the JFK Promenade, east of the intersection towards Skatin’ Place. The eastbound stop is located on the southside of the promenade at the eastern crosswalk, adjacent to the “living room” installation. The new stop will improve transit connections to Muni’s 5, 5R, 21 and 44 lines; provide greater access to attractions on the east side of the park; and offer westbound access for visitors of the Cal Academy.
