Sunset Tunnel Construction on Weekends Only

Dear Neighbor, Business Merchant and Muni Customer:

As part of the Sunset Tunnel Trackway Improvement Project, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will resume weekend construction on the Sunset Tunnel. The work will start at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12 and continue until 3:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15. During construction bus shuttle will replace the N Judah train service running between Ocean Beach and Church & Duboce.

The weekend work that has started previously on Saturday morning the past few months will begin on Friday night from now on. This way we can maximize the work window for the weekend.

After the weekend of Feb. 12, we will have performed 15 weekend shutdowns to complete over 80% of the work. There will be more weekend shutdowns scheduled for 2016. The tentative dates are Feb. 26-29 and Mar. 4-7. We are working diligently with the contractor to expedite the rest of the construction and will do the best we can to finish the work as quickly as possible.

Maximizing construction opportunities, the Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system upgrades will take place at the same time on Judah Street between 16th and 19th avenues, at the intersection of Irving Street and 4th Avenue and on Carl Street between Willard and Stanyan streets. During this work streets and intersections will remain open. The N Judah boarding platforms served by bus shuttles in the areas will be temporarily relocated.

What to Expect during Weekend Construction at Sunset Tunnel:

  • Crews will work continuously from about 8 p.m. Friday until 3:30 a.m. on Monday.
  • Noise control measures will be implemented; however the work will be audible throughout the weekend.
  • The streets near the tunnel entrances will remain open.
  • To accommodate the tunnel work, parking restrictions will become effective before the work starts on both sides of Duboce Avenue from Steiner to Scott Street, and on both sides of Carl Street from Clayton to Cole Street.

Weekend Bus Substitution Service:

  • While Sunset Tunnel is closed for construction, bus shuttles will substitute for the N Judah rail service between Ocean Beach and Church & Duboce during service hours from about 7 p.m. on Friday until end of service at 1 a.m. on Monday.
  • Regular N Judah trains will continue to provide service between Church & Duboce and 4th and King streets.
  • The N bus shuttles will follow the N Judah Line making regular stops except for the tunnel portion where buses will be routed to Haight Street.
  • The N Judah stops at Church & Duboce will provide a transfer point between bus shuttles and trains for Muni customers.
  • The weekend N Judah Owl bus service will not be affected.
  • Bus arrival predictions will be available on NextMuni for the N bus service.

Other Ongoing N Judah System Improvement Projects:

The SFMTA has integrated multiple construction components under the Sunset Tunnel project in order to minimize the inconveniences for both N Judah riders and the community around the construction area.

The Transit Signal Priority (TSP) system upgrades are taking place at nine intersections sequentially along the N Judah Line. This weekend crews will work at the three locations as mentioned above. Here is a note for the neighbors:

  • Work hours will be 8 to 10 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
  • During construction the streets will remain open; however there will be lane closures and traffic will be diverted.
  • The eastbound wheelchair accessible platform at 19th Avenue will temporarily move to the southwest corner of Judah Street and 20th Avenue.
  • The westbound accessible platform at 18th Avenue and the island stop at 16th Avenue will move to the curbside.
  • Bus shuttles will provide accessible service at the curb.
  • Street parking at construction site will be temporarily unavailable.
  • Driveway access will be maintained.
  • There will be noise during excavation of the sidewalk and roadway.

The TSP system will use technology to reduce dwell time at traffic signals for Muni light rail vehicles by holding green lights longer.

The construction of the wheelchair accessible platforms on Judah and 28th Avenue was successfully completed in late March 2015. The westbound and eastbound stops are now in service for the N Judah customers.

The new platforms include longer boarding islands and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant curb ramps, making Muni Metro system safer and easier to use for all customers.

Thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to improve your Muni system.

Superbowl Muni Route and Stop Changes

Superbowl Muni Route and Stop Changes

Super Bowl City presented by Verizon is being constructed at Justin Herman Plaza at Market Street from Beale to Steuart streets.  That means we will experience transportation impacts in the Financial District and South of Market neighborhoods until February 12.   The Super Bowl 50 Muni Map shows only the route and stop changes that will be in effect (see our full Muni system map).

Here’s a brief summary of the Muni route and stop changes:

  • The F Market & Wharves streetcar line will be served by bus shuttles between Castro Street and The Embarcadero.
  • The 2 Clement, 3 Jackson, and 31 Balboa routes will turn back north of Market Street, where riders can connect to any of the routes traveling down that corridor.
  • The inbound 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid will re-route on Mission and 2nd streets between the Transbay Terminal and Market Street.
  • Terminal stops will be moved for the 6 Haight/Parnassus, 9 San Bruno and 9R San Bruno Rapid, the 14 Mission and 14R Mission Rapid, the 21 Hayes and the 41 Union routes.
  • Terminal stops will also be moved for these express routes starting Monday, January 25: the 7X, 1BX, 14X, 30X, 31AX/BX and the 38AX/BX.
  • No route changes are planned on Muni Metro lines, but extra subway service will be provided after concerts to help customers get home.

Although the Super Bowl festivities take place between January 30 to February 7, streets in the area will be closed to vehicle traffic up to February 12 to allow for staging and disassembly.

During that time, the Embarcadero BART/Muni Station entrance at Market and Spear streets will also be closed because it’s within the security zone. There will be an exception during morning rush hours, approximately 6:45 a.m. – 9:45 a.m., when that station entrance/exit will be open.

Also attached are documents about getting around during Super Bowl 50 in English as well as Chinese, Spanish and Tagalog.  We hope you find them helpful and useful.
