Upcoming Tree-Planting in Sunnyside

Sunnyside, Glen Park & Mt. Davidson residents can get new trees on your street this summer. Neighborhood Launch event on July 7th!

Friends of the Urban Forest (FUF) is a non-profit organization that helps San Francisco residents get new trees on their blocks, and covers most of the costs. They have planted over 50k trees in San Francisco, but we still have more work to do!

In partnership with the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association (SNA) and the Monterey Heights Homes Association, FUF is launching a community tree planting happening throughout the Sunnyside, Glen Park & Mt. Davidson area this September –– and FUF has raised money to subsidize tree planting for local residents!  FUF can help you plant a tree in the sidewalk or yard in front of your home AND will come back for 3 – 5 years of follow-up tree care.

Friends of the Urban Forest on Tree-Care Fix

We all have a stake in greening our neighborhood, but over the long term there are problems to be dealt with. Here is some information about the solution that Friends of the Urban Forest (along with others) is offering. A representative from FUF will be giving a presentation and answering your questions at the August 1st SNA quarterly meeting at St Finn Barr Auditorium (7 p.m.). [Source: http://www.fuf.net/fix/]

Friends of the Urban Forest: Fix the Tree & Sidewalk Mess

Why the system is broken

Over the last 30 years, the City has cut the budget for street tree maintenance and sidewalk repair so deeply that individual trees don’t get inspected or pruned nearly as often as they should. Trees should be pruned every 3 to 5 years, yet the majority of San Francisco street trees are pruned only every 12 to 15 years. This increases the risk for limb drops and tree falls, which endanger people and property.

After our Transportation Demand Management (TDM) Open House event on May 18th, we invited all of our interested parties to take part in our Transportation Demand Management Neighborhood Survey. If you haven’t done so already, we want you to tell us which sustainable travel options would be effective in your neighborhood. The survey will close on June 30, 2016.

Background Info on Survey
Prior to submitting a development application, a developer may request assistance from Planning Department staff to identify the TDM measures that make sense for their specific project and neighborhood. Planning’s website will also include a document titled “TDM Program Standards” and an online tool to help add points for their selected measures.

Once they’ve selected their measures, the developer will submit their choices along with their TDM Plan Review application. Planning will then work with other City staff to ensure the selected measures appropriately meet their targets and are implemented correctly.

The overall goal of the survey is receive feedback from the public regarding specific measures in the menu of options. In particular, we are interested if any measures would be particularly effective in your neighborhood. We will summarize the information received by neighborhood and provide it in a staff report to the Planning Commission on July 14, 2016. That summary may be useful to individuals and neighborhood organizations when working with developers of projects in your neighborhood.

Please download the menu of options before filling out the TDM survey, available here.
