Defaced Havelock Bridge Mural Restored

The mural located at the foot of the Havelock Bridge on Circular Drive has been restored by its designer, Christine Martinez Weibel. It had been damaged several months ago by extensive graffiti. For those unfamiliar with the Havelock Bridge, it is a pedestrian link from the Sunnyside neighborhood to Balboa Park that crosses over Interstate 280, which is located at the foot of Edna Street.

Originally painted in 2023 by local illustrator Neil Ballard, the mural was funded by a 2019 District 7 Participatory Budgeting proposal that featured several projects to improve the safety of the bridge. The project included the addition of a crosswalk and signage to improve pedestrian safety, clearing of overgrown vegetation that obscured visibility, and reinforcing the bridge’s fencing. Weibel explained that one intended benefit of the mural was to slow down traffic by attracting drivers’ attention heading toward City College as they approach the bridge, where the street turns sharply west toward City College.

Help Improve Safety Near Freeway Ramps

The Transportation Authority is conducting the Vision Zero Freeway Ramps Study to improve safety at 11 freeway ramps around town, including I-280 at Monterey, I-280 southbound and San Jose Avenue/Sadowa Street, and I-280 northbound and Alemany/San Jose.

The study aims to identify near-term improvements to slow speeds and enhance transportation safety. Feedback can be provided through a survey by May 19.

Town hall meetings will be held in May, including May 6 at the Potrero Hill Library, May 7 at the Portola Library, and May 15 at the Ingleside Library.

You can also share your feedback through a survey. Your feedback will help SFMTA develop safety improvements to slow speeds, reduce conflicts, and address the leading causes of crashes at freeway ramp locations. Take the survey to give input on current challenges and priorities. Give your feedback by May 19. The survey is also available in Spanish, Chinese, and Filipino

We will let you know soon about an SFMTA presentation on this at our next meeting.
