Vision Zero enforcement

Ingleside Police Station announces traffic safety enforcement with a focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety:

Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations Plan for San Francisco with OTS [Office of Traffic Safety] Grant

The San Francisco Police Department will conduct Traffic Safety Enforcement Operations on May 4th, 8th, 16th and 26th with a focus on bicycle and pedestrian safety. Over the past three years, the department has identified areas where significant numbers of pedestrian and bicycle-related collisions have occurred and responded by deploying additional officers to those areas in an effort to prevent deaths and injuries. Special attention will be given to Focus on the Five violations: excessive and unsafe speed, unsafe turns, failure to stop for signs and signals, failure to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, as well as any other dangerous violation.

San Francisco is committed to eliminating traffic deaths on our streets by 2024 as part of Vision Zero SF. Vision Zero SF is our city’s commitment to prioritize safe streets for everyone.

Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities are rising in California as more people use these non-motorized means of transportation. In 2013, California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.

All riders are reminded to always wear a helmet – those under 18 years of age must wear helmets by law. Pedestrians should cross the street only in marked or unmarked crosswalks at corners. All motorists are reminded to be mindful of others who share the road.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Seen on the Streets: Speed humps finally being laid on Hearst Ave

Nine months after SFMTA approved speed humps for Hearst Ave between Edna and Foerster, it appears they are being laid. This block is home to two schools, Sunnyside Elementary and St Finn Barr School.

Though it doesn't look it, there is a hump of paving between the cones. Hearst Ave just west of Edna Street.

SNA Quarterly Meeting – all welcome

You are invited: Come to the quarterly meeting of the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association on Monday April 24th. Find out what is happening in Sunnyside — hear from city officials and ask your questions — meet your neighbors in person — become a member of your neighborhood association.

Time and place: Monday April 24th, 7-8:30 pm, at St Finn Barr Auditorium (415 Edna Street at Hearst Ave).

What’s On the Agenda: This is an exciting time for Sunnyside. Our pedestrian safety proposal won the funds to improve our streets during recent Participatory Budgeting — hear details about how this project will go.

There is a very important housing and park development, Balboa Reservoir Project, that will go up just on our south border — hear how you can have an effect on which proposed idea is chosen — and it’s happening soon. A representative from the Planning Dept will be here to present information on the Project.

There will be speakers on the urban beekeeping issue, and the Natural Areas Program, pesticides, tree removal and run-off. A representative from Supervisor Yee’s office will be present.  And there will be time to hear from members about their ideas and concerns.

We got it! Pedestrian Safety for Sunnyside Streets

The votes are in from the recent round of District 7 Participatory Budgeting — and the Sunnyside pedestrian safety proposal got a fantastic number of notes — 892 — and came second in its category. As far as we know at this point, that secures the $120,000 needed to make those improvements happen. A big thank-you to all those who took the time to vote.

This is the package of improvements that SNA helped draft, working with Sunnyside Elementary School PTA, Friends of Monterey Boulevard, and other local residents. Congratulations are due all around! Details on what we asked for below.
