Enhanced crosswalk installed at Hearst and Gennessee

As part of the pedestrian safety improvements resulting from the Participatory Budgeting grant that Sunnyside won in 2017, several changes have been made around the neighborhood, and are still in progress. This crosswalk was identified as a hazardous crossing, for both pedestrians and cars–there are stop signs only for traffic on Hearst Ave.

SFMTA rejected the request by SNA and Sunnyside neighbors to install a four-way stop here. Instead they have just completed a striped crosswalk for increased visibility.

Although there are special signs to warn cars on Gennessee to yield to pedestrians, the sign for north-bound cars is completely obscured, rendering it useless.

Balboa Reservoir community walk

Despite chilly winds last Thursday May 17, many local residents turned out for the community walk from the site of the proposed Balboa Reservoir housing project to the Balboa Park BART and MUNI Station, to evaluate the hazards to pedestrians and bicyclists. The aim of the developers and the City is to encourage more car-free transit use for new and existing residents in the area, but this particular route can be unpleasant and dangerous. There will be improvements to this route, including items already planned in SFMTA’s Ocean Avenue project. More about that here.

Many representatives were present from the AvalonBay/BRIDGE development team for the project, as well as from SFMTA and WalkSF, to take feedback and offer participants the chance to answer survey questions about various elements of this quarter-mile stretch of Ocean Ave. Developer website: http://www.balboareservoir.com/

It was a lively conversation. A great many on the walk participants were seasoned transit users with clear opinions about this infamous route to the Station.  A reporter from the Ingleside-Excelsior Light was present.

May 17: Balboa Reservoir Community Walk

As part of the development of the Balboa Reservoir for housing, the noisy hazard-ridden pedestrian route from there to the Balboa Park Station is being addressed. Join the development team for a walk on Ocean Avenue on Thursday May 17, 6-7:30pm. From SF Planning Dept:

planning

Dear Balboa Community Members,

The Balboa Reservoir development team will be hosting a community walk along Ocean Avenue from the Balboa Reservoir to BART/MUNI on Thursday, May 17th. This will be an opportunity to discuss the existing challenges and opportunities to improve the transportation conditions along this stretch of right-of-way.

The walk will be from 6:00pm to 7:30pm on Thursday, May 17th and will begin at Unity Plaza (outside of 1100 Ocean Avenue).

Thank you for your ongoing interest and participation in the Balboa Reservoir project.

SFMTA: Yet more pedestrian safety upgrades for Sunnyside streets

SFMTA sends this update on how they are implementing pedestrian safety improvements in Sunnyside, in part as a result of our Participating Budgeting grant from last year, but also due to the increased attention Monterey Blvd is getting since being identified as a High-Injury Corridor last year. Images added by SNA for illustration.

It’s time for an update on the progress of the Sunnyside area traffic and safety improvements were listed in the participatory budget application.

  • The feedback on daylighting of intersections on Monterey Blvd, Hearst Street and Congo Street were mostly supportive of some parking loss to increasing pedestrian safety, so we are moving forward with this plan.

Daylighting increases visibility. Left, without; right, with.

Work orders should be sent out in the next week or two with implementation within the next month.

  • We do not recommend stop signs at Gennessee/Hearst and Congo/Mangels. Additional red zones as part of the daylighting will be installed. Continental crosswalks will be installed at Gennessee/Hearst.
