The next meeting of the Balboa Reservoir Community Advisory Committee is Monday Oct 2, at City College Multi-Use Building, Room 140, 55 Phelan Avenue, San Francisco. The Biophile: Who you gonna call?

As of July 1 the City of San Francisco has taken over responsibility for the care and maintenance of all street trees and repair of tree-related sidewalk damage. But individual tree lovers can still play a role in keeping our urban forest healthy and safe.

As you walk around the city, you may occasionally notice a sidewalk buckled by tree roots; a broken or unstable branch; a low branch interfering with pedestrians or street traffic; a diseased, dying, or dead tree; a tree basin that’s empty or has a stump where a new tree can be planted; or failing hardware (such as broken stakes) around a young tree. Report it!

You can call the City’s Bureau of Urban Forestryat 415-554-6700 or email them at urbanforestry@sfdpw.org.

Or you can contact SF311, the City’s customer service department, by calling 311 from any phone that has a number in the 415 area code (otherwise call them at 415-701-2311). You can also use the SF311 app on any smartphone. Or go to the “new request” page on their website, scroll to “Tree Maintenance,” and click “Service Request.”

Now that the selection of the developer for the Balboa Reservoir site has been made, the prospect of the new housing project to the south may be more real for residents here.

Community involvement through the Balboa Reservoir Community Advisory Committee (BRCAC) will be an ongoing process, as the developer is called to mitigate the impacts–parking, traffic and public amenities–on Sunnyside and other adjacent neighborhoods. All residents are welcome at the meetings of the BRCAC. The next meeting is Monday October 2nd, 2017.

Sat Aug 19: Circular Ribbon Garden Clean-up Day

With sponsorship from SF Parks Alliance, there will be a clean-up day for the ‘ribbon garden’* that runs along Circular Avenue next to the I-280 freeway.

When: Saturday August 19th, from 9:00am to 12:30pm

Where: Meet at the Congo Street triangle, Circular Ave and Congo St. at 9:00 am.

What: Drop in anytime to help weed, pick-up trash and beautify Circular!

Circular_Ave_Ribbon_Garden_opening_ceremony_Mayor_Ed_Lee — The 2011 opening ceremony for the Circular Ribbon Garden, with Mayor Ed Lee and Supervisor Scott Wiener in attendance, along with local residents who helped make it happen, including Pat Moore, Ming Louie, Bob Abra, and many others.

So called because the garden is very long and narrow, running along Circular Ave from Monterey Blvd to Havelock Street.
