The Last Panel – The Diego Rivera Mural leaves City College, for now

Today, the last panel of Pan-American Unity is to be removed to SF Museum of Modern Art for restoration. The famous mural by Diego Rivera has resided in the City College theatre named for the artist since the 1950s. After work on it is finished at SFMOMA, the 75-foot long mural will return to City College, to be installed in the planned new Diego Rivera Theatre, on Frida Kahlo Way, yet to be constructed.

New bike-share stations proposed for Frida Kahlo Way

On December 6th, SFMTA will consider three new Bay Wheels bike-share stations that are near (but not in) Sunnyside, two on Frida Kahlo Way to serve City College and the coming Balboa Reservoir housing development and one on San Jose Avenue at Santa Rosa. Full agenda here.

UPDATE Dec 2019: The San Jose Ave station was rejected due to conflicts with Muni. The two CCSF stations were accepted.

New signal equipment on Frida Kahlo Way

For everyone who has waited at red lights on Frida Kahlo Way when there are no cars crossing the intersection, this is good news: SFMTA’s Signal Shop workers have installed new equipment to replace the broken detectors (did they ever work?) which have meant inefficient and frustrating experiences for drivers over the last few years.

SFMTA’s Mark Dreger, who is heading up the Ocean Avenue Safety Project, met recently with members of the SNA Balboa Reservoir Committee, and got an earful about the miseries of Frida Kahlo Way. He got this feedback to the right people, and the problem was fixed this week. The system will be getting the kinks worked out initally.

SF Examiner: Phelan Avenue to be renamed Frida Kahlo Way after public vote

After a public vote that included City College of San Francisco and the surrounding neighborhood, Phelan Avenue’s contentious name will be replaced with that of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The name change is an effort to strip away the legacy of former San Francisco Mayor James Duval Phelan from street signs in the area. Apart from his generous contribution to the arts, Phelan is remembered for anti-immigrant policies and racist election slogans in the early 1900s.  Continue reading “SF Examiner: ‘Phelan Avenue to be renamed Frida Kahlo Way after public vote’”
