Local Greening Hero Ming Louie Passes Away

Longtime Sunnysider and dedicated local volunteer Ming Louie passed away yesterday evening. He will be missed by by all who knew him, but the work he did on behalf of our local green spaces in Sunnyside will live on.

Ming Louie ( center) with Pat Moore, SNA Greening Committee Chair, and Ed Lee, San Francisco Mayor, in Sept 2011, at the dedication ceremony for the Circular Ribbon Garden.

Ming had the terrible misfortune to be hit by a car on Monterey Boulevard in 2016, the first of a series of pedestrian/cyclist injuries and deaths that led to the street being designated a High Injury Corridor by the City. Read more about that here and here.

A remembrance of Ming by his friend Pat Moore:

Aug 18: Resilient Sunnyside meeting – share your stories

You are invited to join SF Community Living Campaign and SNA for a special meeting “Resilient Sunnyside” on Tuesday August 18th, 3:30-4:30 PM via Zoom. Meeting outline at the end of this post. Read more about resilient neighborhoods here.

From Community Living Campaign:

This is our fourth in a series and has been an important opportunity to exchange stories of hope, compassion, and joy about your neighbors during this pandemic.

The focus of the conversation is to hear stories about what is resonating and happening day-to-day with folks of how to stay safe and connected in the midst of Covid-19 while living sheltered in place. I will start off with your personal history with your neighborhood, and how your program has mobilized to meet the needs of your neighbors. I plan to then ask you to share an inspiring story about this unprecedented time in your neighborhoods. We will have time for Q&A as well.

Meeting outline found below. Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/86567474200 for the Roundtable. If you have a question or idea that I should include in this conversation, let me know. Please promote this virtual conversation with your network of neighbors, friends, family, community groups and elected officials.

Be well, safe & sane,

Detroit Steps Cleanup Day

On Sunday August 9th, a crew of dedicated volunteers again met to tackle the weed growth on the Upper Steps north of Monterey Blvd. They also worked on installing some terracing on the steeply sloped narrow strip that flanks the stairway. This is the beginning of developing a larger landscaping and viewing area. A big thank-you to Bart, Sebastian, Daryl, and Ian for their hard work. This local community project will help make Sunnyside shine.
