After a public vote that included City College of San Francisco and the surrounding neighborhood, Phelan Avenue’s contentious name will be replaced with that of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The name change is an effort to strip away the legacy of former San Francisco Mayor James Duval Phelan from street signs in the area. Apart from his generous contribution to the arts, Phelan is remembered for anti-immigrant policies and racist election slogans in the early 1900s.  Continue reading “SF Examiner: ‘Phelan Avenue to be renamed Frida Kahlo Way after public vote’”

Balboa Reservoir housing project opponents launch ballot measure

By Laura Waxmann on March 15, 2018 5:28 pm

Advocates concerned that a proposed 1,100 unit housing development at the Balboa Reservoir will exacerbate parking issues and further delay long-standing construction plans for a performance center at City College of San Francisco are planning to take the issue to city voters.

On Monday, Save CCSF, a coalition of City College professors, community members and public education advocates, filed initial paperwork for a ballot measure that would prohibit new development on the Balboa Reservoir site until a planned Performing Arts Education Center on an adjacent site is “built, completed and opened to the public.”

Advocates for the Save CCSF coalition have spoken out against the “privatization of public land” and called for the Public Utilities Commission, which owns the reservoir, to transfer the land to City College.

“I don’t think there should be housing built right now, it should be a campus,” said Tomasita Medal, of Save CCSF.  Continue reading “SF Examiner: ‘Balboa Reservoir housing project opponents launch ballot measure’”
