Local Greening Hero Ming Louie Passes Away

Longtime Sunnysider and dedicated local volunteer Ming Louie passed away yesterday evening. He will be missed by by all who knew him, but the work he did on behalf of our local green spaces in Sunnyside will live on.

Ming Louie ( center) with Pat Moore, SNA Greening Committee Chair, and Ed Lee, San Francisco Mayor, in Sept 2011, at the dedication ceremony for the Circular Ribbon Garden.

Ming had the terrible misfortune to be hit by a car on Monterey Boulevard in 2016, the first of a series of pedestrian/cyclist injuries and deaths that led to the street being designated a High Injury Corridor by the City. Read more about that here and here.

A remembrance of Ming by his friend Pat Moore:

Feb 15: Big workday for Circular Ribbon Garden

Please join the usual crew of noble volunteers–and a special contingent of workers form SF Parks Alliance–for a day of beatification (and trash pickup) on the Circular Ribbon Garden.

The next workday is Saturday February 15th, from 9 AM to Noon. Meet at Congo Street and Circular Avenue. There will be tools and gloves, but if you can, please bring your own. Go green while greening–don’t forget your reusable water bottle!

Prompt response — DPW trims Circular Ribbon Garden oak tree

The San Francisco Department of Public Works took over care of the city’s street trees a couple years ago.  Here is that voter-approved proposition in action — a big oak tree in the Circular Ribbon Garden needed a good deal of attention, and a request recently brought DPW workers out to work on it. They did a great job. Thank you DPW!

The Circular Ribbon Garden

By Pat Moore

In 2011, after three years of intense work by a roster of some 35+ volunteers, Circular Avenue was changed from an unofficial dump into a beautiful SF Park: the Circular Avenue Ribbon Garden, so-named because it consists of the 6′ of land between the curb and the 280 Freeway fence, running the 3/4 mile stretch from Monterey Blvd. to Havelock, near CCSF. It’s cleaner now, but needs regular attention. And we have plans for the future!
