Community meeting on funding for more park improvements – May 30th at the Sunnyside Conservatory

Date:                Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Time:               6:30 — 8:00 PM

Location:         Sunnyside Conservatory  (Monterey Blvd. between Congo/Baden Sts.)

This is a jointly sponsored meeting by the two local park advocacy groups: Sunnyside Park Families & Neighbors and the Friends of Sunnyside Conservatory.

The purpose of this meeting is to gather support and input for the completion of grant applications to fund smaller capital construction improvements to our two neighborhood parks.

The funding source comes from a $5 Million portion of the “Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks” General Obligation Bond passed by voters in 2008 called the “Community Opportunity Fund.”

Neighborhood and park groups compete for funds to build permanent improvements in local parks. One requirement for an award is citizen participation where credit is given against a percentage of the award for volunteer time spent and expertise of pro-bono professionals with planning, design, stewardship, community out-reach, and beautification contributions to a park.

Visit the Recreation & Parks Department website for more information: www.sfrecpark.org/COF.aspx

Between the two neighborhood parks, a large variety of user group recreational needs are served and a few additional improvements will further the enjoyment and usability of the sites. For the Conservatory, enhancement to the lighting system for popular musical concerts and private events is sought.

The Park has become a favorite destination for families with children from all over The City. The influx of many more visitors than ever before has taken a toll on hillsides where erosion has become an issue and a unique natural spring is in need of protect.
