First of all I wanted to wish everyone a very happy lunar new year,
It has been nearly a month since assuming office on January 8. There was much to celebrate right at the start with many new people to meet. I was proud to host a
victory dinner the day before I was sworn into office and meet many of you although I was not able to speak to each and every one. On the following day of after the inaugural meeting, in my City Hall office, I was greeted by more people than I can remember.
I realized that this was only the beginning, as it did not take long for me to get enough meeting request that would last me through all of 2013. As much as I wanted to accommodate individuals with all their requests to meet quickly, I wanted to balance that with meeting with various city departments to strengthen my knowledge and understanding of who does what in the City so I could better serve District 7 and the rest of San Francisco. In addition, District 7 has a tremendous number of organized neighborhood groups where much communication takes place regarding neighborhood issues. My staff and I are beginning to make our rounds visiting and engaging with these groups beginning with Sunset Height Association of Responsible Citizens, West of Twin Peaks CentralCouncil, Sunnyside Neighborhood Association and West Portal Merchants.
I want to start scheduling my regular Saturday morning community office hours starting on March 9 so I can individually meet with residents from District 7 who normally find it difficult to access their representatives in City Hall. It will be a great opportunity to listen to ideas, thoughts and feedback directly from those individuals whose concerns may get lost when I meet with neighborhood groups.
The first order of business for me will be to address pedestrian safety issues in District 7. This is an issue that was of concern to a vast number of residents as I campaigned for this office last year. There are a large number of families with young children and seniors in our district. I have asked for a hearing on District 7 pedestrian safety to be held in the near future. I have also asked various City departments to provide the necessary information and analyses to make our streets safer for pedestrians. This will include the 19th Avenue Transit Study that is being presented to the public this month. I look forward to community members articulating their concerns at this hearing so that the resulting report takes all perspectives into consideration.

Meet the office
Many of you have already had a chance met my team, but for those of you who haven’t, meet Esther Lee, Matthias Mormino and Olivia Scanlon. Together, they bring over 15 years of experience in local and state government. Esther is a former aide to California Senate President Pro Tempore, John Burton. Matthias has been a legislative aide for Supervisor Jane Kim for 2 years. And Olivia has been a legislative aide for a decade, first serving in the office of Supervisor Tony Hall and later serving in Supervisor Sean Elsbernd’s office.

Legislative Update
At my first full Board of Supervisors meeting I was proud to introducea hearing on Pedestrian Safety in District 7. I am directing the MTA, the Planning Department and the Department of Public Health to report on the number of collisions and fatal collisions as well as the most dangerous intersections in District 7. Additionally I would like the Transportation Authority to present on priority Pedestrian Safety Projects in District 7 and available funding for those projects because I want to ensure that the needs of District 7 are met.
I look forward to a constructive dialogue over the upcoming months and I will be working closely with all of you and city staff to continue to monitor this really important issue
