Monterey Blvd. Greening Work Day – Sunday, February 2 – 9:30 a.m.

There will be a greening clean-up Sunday Feb 2, starting on Monterey Blvd at Acadia, at 9:30am  The “pointy-bit” median needs trash pick-up and clearing of weeds & leaves around the plants. From there we’ll move to Circular, to pick up trash as far as we can go toward Judson. (It hasn’t been wet enough for most weeds to grow, which is both bad & good news.)

You may have seen the new irrigation systems installed on the Monterey medians. We’re pleased the city has provided this, & we’ve asked when they will be activated. Please report any irrigation & other problems to us, and if it’s urgent, alert 311.

Thanks: we’ll be glad to have your help on Sunday!

Community Meeting – San Jose Avenue improvements, Monday 2/3/14 6:30 p.m. Glen Park School

Join Supervisor Scott Wiener, the SF Municipal Transportation Agency, the College Hill Neighborhood Association and the Glen Park Association at an upcoming community meeting on Monday, February 3 to discuss proposed safety improvements for San Jose Avenue between Monterey Boulevard and Randall Street.   The City, after many years of working with Caltrans and other stakeholders, would like to present a proposal aimed at maximizing safety for all users of the street.  Many vehicles travel well above the posted speed limit along this segment – this project aims to bring vehicle closer to 35 mph.   Join your neighbors to hear more about this proposal and how the City plans on collecting data to evaluate the success of the project.  The community meeting will be held at the Glen Park School (151 Lippard Ave. at Boswell St.) at 6:30pm.

BACKGROUND

The Balboa Park BART/Muni Station is one of the busiest intermodal transit facilities in the region. As the major hub for the southern part of San Francisco, the station serves more than 24,000 passengers daily with its four BART lines, multiple major local bus routes, and three light rail transit (LRT) lines. But access to the station, particularly for non-auto modes, is complicated by tightly squeezed station functions and its location adjacent to the I-280 Geneva-Ocean Avenue interchange system, whose multiple on- and off-ramps deliver heavy auto traffic to the station and its surrounding neighborhoods, causing multimodal conflicts with transit and pedestrians.

STUDY PURPOSE

This Circulation Study focuses on potential modifications to the Balboa Park Station and adjacent I-280 interchanges at Geneva Avenue and Ocean Avenue. The main goals of the Study are to:

  • Reduce multimodal conflicts (vehicles, transit, pedestrians) at the I-280 freeway ramps while not substantially degrading vehicle operations in the area, including the I-280 freeway mainline.
  • Provide safe, accessible, and convenient connections for pedestrians, bicycle, and intermodal travelers.
  • Develop cost-effective solutions that support the community values and goals, without substantial construction-related impacts, that can be implemented in 2–10 years.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Balboa Park Station Area Study community meetingA Balboa Park Community Advisory Committee (BPCAC), whose membership and bi-monthly meetings are open to the public, monitors progress and provides input on the multiple station-related improvements currently under development. The BPCAC also provides input on this Study’s work to develop the next generation of capital improvements in the station area. The San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) is also conducting additional outreach, including public meetings, to seek wider input throughout the study.

On September 30, 2013 the SFCTA hosted the first of two community meetings for the Study. Meeting attendees were briefed on the existing conditions assessment and then invited to participate in working group discussions of the three conceptual alternatives developed in the initial study phase. In addition to providing feedback during the working groups, participants completed comment cards.

See the alternatives exhibits from the community meeting, and the meeting summary.

Community Meeting and CAC

The next scheduled BPCAC meeting is being held in conjunction with a community meeting on Thursday, January 30, 2014, 5:30–8:30 PM at the City College Multi-use Building, 55 Phelan Ave., Room 140. [map]
