One of the intersections called out as dangerous to walkers and cyclists in SNA’s winning pedestrian safety proposal in the recent round of Participatory Budgeting was Baden Street and Hearst Avenue. This week a DPW contractor began work on the first step toward better safety for vulnerable road users here: installing ADA (yellow bumpy) ramps on each of the corners. Are painted crosswalks next?

Complaints are flooding City Hall as word spreads that San Francisco’s beloved Hetch Hetchy drinking water is being mixed with less pristine groundwater.
So many, in fact, that Supervisor Norman Yee was compelled to call Wednesday’s hearing to ask the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to address the myriad of concerns, from the safety of the water to the need for the change.
Four wells pulling up water 450 feet below in the West Basin Aquifer are in the testing phase and by summer to early fall, 1 million gallons daily of underground water will go into the system. The plan is to reach 4 million gallons daily by 2020, 15 percent of the water supply delivered to some 60 percent of the water users.
One well, located by Lake Merced, pumped water into the system over two days in April. The other wells will be tested in June and July.
During the two-hour hearing Wednesday, mothers worried about the impacts on their young children, some residents said they felt like guinea pigs and others referred to the added groundwater as contamination. This June, community members will have three chances to comment on the three finalists in the Balboa Reservoir request for proposals (RFP) process. All three opportunities will provide the same information. You can provide feedback in whichever venue is most convenient for you. On Saturday, June 10 at 10am, in the Archbishop Riordan High School Cafeteria (175 Phelan Ave), the three finalist development teams will present their proposals, followed by discussion and comments. The meeting will also have refreshments, interpretation in Spanish and Cantonese, closed captioning and children’s activities. Please arrive early so you have time to sign in and get the most out of these activities.
On Thursday, June 15th at 6pm, the Balboa Reservoir Community Advisory Committee (BRCAC) will view the video of the June 10th presentations, host a discussion, and provide opportunities for feedback on the developer proposals.
