Balboa Reservoir Project (BRP) Update
Amy O’Hair – SNA Sunnyside Representative on BR Community Advisory Committee (BRCAC)
- At the upcoming February 10 BRCAC meeting, the focus will be on the public benefits of the BRP
- For the entitlement to be approved, the environmental review must be finalized and then there are a series of sequential meetings:
- Planning Committee hearing.
- Public Utilities Commission hearing.
- SFMTA hearing.
- Then the Board of Supervisors approve project, final step.
- Construction will not begin until 2021 at the earliest.
- The CAC Charter says it will cease to be a committee once BRP is approved, but the CAC is exploring how to see it continue during construction as that would be in Sunnyside’s best interest.
Jennifer Heggie – Chair of SNA’s Balboa Reservoir Committee
- Construction impacts
- Expect more traffic, noise and air pollution. Will result in significant adverse impacts to surrounding areas even after all mitigation efforts.
- EIR study notes sensitive receptors (sensitive receptors are children, seniors, sensitive individuals). A sampling was made of sensitive receptors along truck and haul routes.
- 10 schools and 16 daycare sites identified within 3200 feet of project
- Worst impacts to people with 500 feet of freeway.
- Tail-pipe emissions, road dust and tire wear and other effects
- Our recommendation is to advocate for health of our community as well as for children and seniors in our vicinity.
- Construction should not be less than 6 years and we should advocate for fewer units
- The committee is looking for volunteers and especially needs volunteers with air quality expertise.
Police Captain Chris Woon of Ingleside Police Station
- Captain Woon was born and raised in the Ingleside District and is now in his 3rd month as Captain.
- He gave a brief introduction of his work at the SFPD, which involved serving as a patrol office, K9 officer, investigator, robbery decoy, DA task force participant, cargo theft task force participant, and multiple other assignments.
- He fielded questions around crime, challenges and priorities.
Assemblymember David Chiu representative – Alex Barrett-Shorter
- The Assemblymember has a capital office in Sacramento (works on Legislation) and also district office in SF (Liaison to Community).
- Assemblymember Chiu’s Office can help with:
- issues at state agencies (DMV, medical, dept insurance)
- recognizing people in the community via certificates of recognition from California state legislature.
- getting Assemblymember Chiu to attend local events
Detroit Steps Project Update – Team presentation
- Much progress has been made. Group has held several productive clean-up days, received a participatory budgeting grant of $25K, and held a successful inaugural Step-a-thon fundraiser
- PB grant will result in installation of new water meter and decorative fence
- City College’s Landscape Design class developed impressive landscape drawings for the gardens along the Upper Steps. Three finalists were selected, and attendees at the SNA meeting voted on their favorite.
