SNA Quarterly Meeting Summary, Nov 2019

Sunnyside Neighborhood Association held its quarterly meeting last night. Here is a summary. Many thanks to our speakers at the final meeting of 2019.

Highlights of the meeting included:

Announcements

  • SNA elections in February, 2020. Please consider running for office!
  • Come to the senior exercise program at St. Finn Barr, Monday and Wednesdays at 9:30am
  • The SNA holiday party will be on Sunday, December 8 at the Sunnyside Conservatory

Tom Doudiet, Assistant Deputy Chief (retired) SF Fire Dept to discuss Westside Auxiliary Water Supply System (AWSS)

  • Western parts of the city have no high pressure water supply system, which could result in unchecked firestorms resulting in significant human loss in the event of a major earthquake or disaster
  • Residents are urged to read the San Francisco Civil Grand Jury Report, July 2019, “Act Now Before It Is Too Late: Aggressively Expand and Enhance our High-Pressure Emergency Firefighting Water System” and write Supervisor Yee to express your thoughts.
  • Supervisors Yee, Mar, Fewer, Safai have sponsored a resolution directing appropriate agencies to address this potentially catastrophic deficiency

 Rosaura Valle, Detroit Steps Project

  • Exciting upcoming events
    • Nov 9, 9-12 noon – Clean-up Day
    • Nov 24, 10-12 noon – Rise and run Step-a-thon
      • $10 for kids
      • $15 for adults
      • 15 minutes to see how many flights of steps you can run
    • $25,000 Participatory Budgeting Award (Phase I) will enable 3 upgrades in 2020:
      • Fence on Monterey Blvd will be replaced with decorative steel Fence ($15K), similar to fence at Conservatory and St. Finn Barr
      • A water meter will be installed to enable future irrigation of lower steps ($10K)
      • Infrastructure problems (cracks in stairs and retaining walls) will be repaired by DPW

Amy O’Hair and Jennifer Heggie, Balboa Reservoir Project

  • Next Balboa Reservoir Project Meeting is Dec 9, 6-8pm in Multi-purpose Room at City College
  • SFMTA studied the proposed shuttle from Balboa Park to City College and BRC and said it was too expensive
  • Parking update
    • Parking impacts are considered separately from the environmental impact report
    • SFMTA studied the parking issue and concluded that parking supply, with the developers option, would exceed the demand
  • Public outreach for Ocean Avenue Safety Project will begin next summer
    • Will redesign the intersection at Freida Kahlo and Ocean Ave and make it safer, as well as to improve the corridor to BART

Pearl Villa – Food Rescue Project

  • Pearl promotes zero waste by rescuing food (using the OLIO app, olioex.com) and invites neighbors to come and eat.
