As part of the SFWater’s Adopt-a-Drain program. Sunnysiders have so far adopted over 50 of the neighborhood’s storm drains. These are neighbors who’ve volunteered who keep the grates free of debris which help avoid local flooding. To sign up and adopt your own drain, go to adoptadrain.sfwater.org click>register. (Don’t forget to give your new drain a good name.)

New this year: SFWater has flagged four Sunnyside storm drains as being in special need of adoption, on Foerster Street at Monterey and Joost.

If you are already an adopter, rain season is coming, so SFWater sends this reminder: 

Dear Drain Defender,
We hope you have had a chance to enjoy the summer. Along with Fall comes the rainy season and a reminder that very light rain is expected early next week. The best time to clear leaves and litter from your drain is prior to rain.

A few reminders before you roll up your sleeves and get to work:

• Clear from the sidewalk, not the street.
• Please never attempt to remove the drain grate.
• Wear reflective clothing so drivers can see you.
• Always wear gloves, use a rake or broom – not your hands, and be careful of sharp objects.
• If you see a badly-clogged drain that you can’t clear, please report it to 311 online at sf311.org, on the app for Android and iPhone, or by calling 3-1-1.

While our crews continue to inspect, clean, repair, replace and maintain our 1,000+ miles of sewer pipes and 25,000 storm drains, we can’t thank you enough for helping minimize the risk of flooding and protecting the environment. We are very proud that our city has come together and over 1,600 community members, like you, have adopted more than 2,469 drains in San Francisco. Keep it going!
