From Supervisor Yee: Invitation to D7 Youth Council

From District 7 Supervisor Norman Yee:

Dear community members,

I hope you’ve all enjoyed your summers and are looking forward to the back-to-school season! This fall I will be kicking off my 3rd year of D7 Youth Council—a youth leadership and civic engagement program for youth ages 13-23. I’d like to invite our youth community members to apply. Please share this via your networks and on NextDoor. The more youth we have civically engaged, the more informed our next generation will be.

  • If interested, we invite you to apply to the 2018-2019 program by completing this application: https://tinyurl.com/d7youthcouncil1819. Deadline to apply is Sept 7, 2018. Interviews will be scheduled mid-September.
  • Meetings will take place on Monday evenings, from 5-7pm, twice a month.
  • If you have any questions, please reach out to Jarlene Choy at Jarlene.Choy@sfgov.org

Purpose

To empower youth and elevate their voices in the community, facilitate meaningful collaboration in addressing issues facing their communities, and offer fresh and diverse perspectives from the community.

Shared Values

Service – Responsibility – Transparency – Fun

Overview

Supervisor Yee started the first Youth Council in 2015-2016 to engage more youth in local government. The District 7 Youth Council is composed of members ranging from high school to college students (age 13-23). The members discuss issues affecting residents of District 7 and communicate directly with the Youth Commissioner of District 7. They propose projects to address issues in the district, draft proposal legislation and review legislation proposed by the Supervisor that affect youth.

Participating on the Youth Council trains participants in leadership, facilitation, policy research, event planning and community organizing skills. Youth Council members gain a better understanding of how City government works, how the Board of Supervisors operates, as well as neighborhood issues affecting District 7. There will be special opportunities to meet with City Department staff and community stakeholders to learn more about current issues and proposals in our City.

Best,

Supervisor Norman Yee
