Pedestrian Safety Improvements for Sunnyside Streets – Cost: $120,000
These proposed pedestrian safety improvements, including strategic stop signs, marked crosswalks, and other measures to promote visibility, directly address specific danger spots in Sunnyside and will substantially increase the pedestrian safety. These improvements were assembled with the input of local residents and the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association.

Here is a brief summary of what’s included, followed by a detailed description:

-Radar speed signs on Monterey to slow traffic down.
-Improvements all along Hearst Ave, especially around the schools and the new “roundabout.”
-Improvements all along Congo Street to increase pedestrian safety.
-Upgrades to pedestrian safety at the Edna and Monterey intersection.
-Address dangers at difficult intersections like Foerster/Judson and Hearst/Baden.

Details:
1. Two radar-activated speed signs for Monterey Boulevard, one for eastbound traffic mounted between Detroit and Edna Streets; one for westbound traffic mounted at Acadia Street.
2. General traffic and pedestrian safety study done to improve Hearst Avenue from Ridgewood Drive to Circular Avenue, with the consideration that this route is the official east-west bicycle route through Sunnyside and there are multiple elementary and nursery schools along this route. Neighbors are particularly interested in stop signs at Congo and Gennessee Streets, and pedestrian safety improvements at Baden, Congo, Foerster, and Gennessee Streets. There is further interest in the improvement of the Hearst/Foerster intersection by adding emboldened crosswalks, button activated illumination, and redesign of the corners of the intersection.
3. General traffic and pedestrian safety study to improve the eastern intersection of Monterey Blvd and Edna Street. Neighbors are particularly interested in increased illumination or improved and emboldened crosswalks.
4. General traffic and pedestrian safety study to improve Congo Street from Bosworth Street to Circular Avenue, with the consideration that traffic uses this route as a shortcut between Monterey Boulevard and Bosworth Street. Neighbors are particularly interested in crosswalks and stop signs at Mangels and Hearst Avenues, 15 mph speed limit signs, speed bumps at various locations, and exploring the possibility of converting Congo into a one-way street.
5. General traffic and pedestrian safety survey to improve the intersection of Foerster Street and Judson Avenue, with the consideration that the intersection occurs at a hillcrest, two elementary schools and a college are located nearby, there is significant pedestrian traffic on school days, and the street is three lanes wide. Neighbors are interested in painted crosswalks, and the possibility of narrowing and redesigning Judson Avenue while widening the southern sidewalk to increase pedestrian trafficability and safety without reducing parking or traffic flow.
