A note from Safeway’s project manager:
Please visit the project website to see the updated architecture and renovation details.

We’re delivering a comprehensive package of technical and architectural drawings to the Planning Department this week. This is in response to Planning’s review of Safeway’s application. I anticipate Planning will and comment on the resubmittal in August and then hopefully provide an estimated date for Planning Commission.
Some key points for the neighborhood, all of which can be seen on the website….
On Monterey Blvd-
- New materials…no more stucco! Hand-picked brick with soldier course layout, wrought iron fencing, additional glass for views into and out of store. My favorite enhancement has been the “neighborhood mural”, which shows the Sunnyside logo as a placeholder, however I grow more attached to it every time I view it.
Bicycles & Pedestrians-
- Providing bike racks front and center at the pedestrian store entrance on Monterey Blvd. Also providing racks and lockers on the rooftop, to accommodate employees and bike trailers. The path of travel for pedestrians has been carefully studied from every vantage point, allowing for easy and safe access.
Groceries-
- Interior store layout created in 3D. See Technical Drawings tab.
Landscaping-
- In discussions with PUC regarding feasibility of “green roofs”. Also, relocated vines and plantings from north-facing Monterey Blvd to south-facing parking lot. The vines will drape through the wrought iron and overhang the front façade.
Fire Department-
- Fire exiting has been drawn in accordance with new building codes. Safeway will be meeting with Fire to review and hone in.
In closing, thank you for your continued interest in the Safeway renovation and patience for the time it’s taken. It’s been a long road, but the improvements have made a great project even better.
