There have been several Sunnyside residents that have noticed painters tape, placed on their residence or car doors.  San Francisco Police Department are aware this is occurring in several San Francisco neighborhoods, and now it appears to be occurring in Sunnyside.

Broken tape will indicate that someone is home. But if the tape remains untouched, it could be a sign to criminals that the resident is away on vacation.

SFPD Officer Albie Esparza states he’s not surprised about this trick. “Criminals are very creative in trying to see if people are home,” he said.  Police said at this point they don’t know if a taped door has led to a burglary. Placing the tape is not a crime, but could be a precursor, a way to case the residence.
